How funny is this…? I was reading a write-up of the original Conan movie from 1982. Among other things, the author discusses James Earl Jones and his methods of dealing with snakes.

I’ll paraphrase the funniest bits here:

“I’m not the first to point this out but James Earl Jones (aka the guy who played both Thulsa Doom and Darth Vader) is more of a real life badass than any character he played. Since Conan’s adversary for the whole movie is a snake cult you better believe there were a lot of snakes on the set. Like, ‘hello I need to take a crap but there’s a snake in the bowl’ amounts of snakes everywhere. Their snake wrangler and his hot snake handler groupies (yeah, contact that; the herpetologist was drowning in trim like some real-life cult leader) would give everybody their own snake for the day to wear around just to make sure everybody got used to having them everywhere, underfoot, constantly, for the entire shoot.

And the only person on set who didn’t freak out about this was James Earl Jones, who probably just stared down whatever massive boa constrictor they thought would balance his enormous sized balls. During the documentary Jones casually lets drop how he didn’t have a problem with snakes because during his green beret training they taught them to not be afraid of snakes. And goes on to let you know that after having his own personal snake live inside his uniform for a week he then had to kill and eat the snake. You know, because its not enough to make a pet out of a deadly serpent, you then have to prove you’re not developing emotional attachments by snapping its neck and devouring the thing. That’s like curing your fear of flying by crashing a plane into the mountains and eating the air hostess to survive.”
