Bush Walking/ Hiking – Pelverata Falls

Today I trudged up to Pelverata Falls. After experiencing some unseasonably warm weather (yes, I know, it’s summer… but it’s been quite warm for a ‘Hobart’ summer so far), we got some welcome rain on Boxing Day. And what happens when it rains? Yes, stuff gets wet… including waterfalls.

A friend of mine did this walk a short while back, so I thought it would be a nice short one to do on a Sunday morning.

To get to Pelverata Falls, head south from Hobart along the Southern Outlet and continue toward Huonville. At the Sandfly turn off (the same place we turned off to go to the Kaoota Tramway), turn left and then right onto Pelverata Road. Pelverata Road is a bit narrow & windy. Drive for about 12km to Pelverata until you see this sign:

Pelverata Falls Turn Off

Turn left into Crosswells Road and stop at this car park:

Park Here

Again, it will be unlikely that my ute will be there when you visit.

From the car park, the trail follows some road works and farms roughly east for a short while and then breaks off to the right (south and east).

Trail...

Trail…

The arrows are make-believe. Just steer clear of the roads.

After rain the track here can become quite muddy. Be careful while walking.

After the rainforest section, the track climbs and becomes quite rocky.

Rocky

From afar you can see Slippery Falls to the right.

Then the trail steeply descends to the Pelverata Falls lookout platform.

There is a short difficult climb down from the lookup to the rocks below. I wouldn’t do it unless you’ve done this kind of thing a lot.

Secret trail down from the lookout. Again, the arrow is imaginary.

I have to admit, the rocks were so slippery I was scrabbling around on all fours once or twice, which made me giggle. I must have looked quite silly…(I’m not known as a giggler…).

And back to the lookout.

Here is a link to my Endomondo/ GPS thingy. It says I did about 7.5km, which includes the scrabble around to the bottom of the lookout. It took 2 and a half hours, and I think the climb down and back from the lookout took about half hour.

Once you’re done, turn around and walk back to your car.

Thanks for reading!
